Standing triumphantly on Madrid’s Plaza de la Independencia, the red-brick building that houses the Hospes Madrid overlooks the famous Alcalá Gate and sprawling Retiro Park of the Spanish capital. Built in 1883, the former apartment house for wealthy families is now a 41-room hotel complete with restaurant, lounge bar and spa. Though speckled with beautiful historic elements – wrought-iron balconies, lobby mouldings, an imposing wood entrance door – the Hospes Madrid is anything but antiquated. Each of the 35 rooms and 6 suites is individually designed and uniquely decorated, and each comes with a wealth of modern amenities: bathrobes, slippers, ADSL, pillow menu, all-natural cosmetic kit, top-quality Egyptian cotton sheets, 24-hour room service, plasma TV, DVD player and music centre, and daily selection of local, national and international papers.

For guest pampering and relaxation, the building’s former stable house was transformed into a three-storey Bodyna Spa, a separate structure accessed through a beautiful interior patio and overlooking the hotel’s outside terrace garden. There, guests can take a dip in the heated swimming pool, relax in the Jacuzzi, enjoy a wet or dry sauna or choose from one of many massages and treatments offered by the team of seasoned practitioners and therapists. The spa also includes a fully-equipped work-out room, a hairdressing service and, on the top floor, a multi-windowed, sound-proofed space ideal for a quiet Spanish siesta.

Back in the main building, a range of dining and social spaces provide for entertainment, culinary and business needs. At the Senzone Tapas Bar, guests can enjoy a casual meal or a quick snack; at the Senzone Restaurant, a fancier fine dining experience awaits, featuring a menu of traditional local dishes approached with modern sensibilities and techniques; and at the Senzone Lounge Bar on the mezzanine, guests can choose from a long list of wines, liqueurs, coffees, teas and cocktails. The lounge can also be used as a hall for meetings and celebrations, as can the outdoor patio, entire mezzanine area or specifically-dedicated meeting rooms, ranging from 35 to 66 square metres.
