Tolmachevo Airport began operations on 12 July 1957, when a TU-104 jet with the side number L-5419 made the first passenger flight from Novosibirsk to Moscow. There were 50 passengers on board of flight No 020. This flight was the date of the establishment of the civil airport on the base of the existing military facility.

Novosibirsk airport is the biggest transit hub on the main routes between Europe and Asia beyond the Urals. Concentration of the rail, vehicular and water thruways in Novosibirsk, broadening of trade-economics relations of Siberian Federal Region with foreign and Russian partners and development of regional infrastructure support Tolmachevo development as the biggest air transport hub.
