Location

Sabiha Gokcen International Airport is one of the airports serving Istanbul, Turkey. The facility is named after Sabiha Gökçen, the first female combat pilot in the world. It is on the Asian side of the bicontinental city, Istanbul. It was built because the Atatürk International Airport (on the European side) was not large enough to meet the booming passenger demands (both domestic and international). SAW's international terminal capacity is 3M passengers/year and the domestic terminal capacity is 0.5M/year.

In June 2007, Turkish conglomerate Limak, India's GMR group and Malaysia Airport Holding Berhad (MAHB) consortium got the contract for upgrading and maintaining the airport. In mid-2008, ground has been broken to upgrade the international terminal to handle 10 million passengers annually.

Sabiha Gokcen International Airport is getting ready to open new horizons for Turkey, just like the woman combat pilot of Turkey that it is named after. The Airport which is the first step towards the "Advanced Technology Industry Park" project, which shall serve the country in numerous fields such as transportation, foreign trade, aviation and technology, shall act as a leader for conversion of the region into a technology base in the future.
