Officially opened in 1933 as the civil airport at Mousehold (a small community to the north of the city), Norwich Airport was originally little more than a general aviation facility. At the outbreak of war it was taken over by the Royal Air Force and by the end of the war aircraft had developed to the extent that Mousehold was no longer considered suitable for further development. In 1967, however, Norfolk County Council and Norwich City Council bought the Royal Air Force airfield at Horsham St Faiths and the intervening land, creating a sizeable area capable of development into a modern civil aviation facility.
In May 1999 Norwich Airport launched its new corporate identity as Norwich International to strengthen its image as a gateway to international destinations.
The airport offers both business passengers and holidaymakers a convenient and inexpensive starting point for their journey. It has direct access from the A140 Norwich to Cromer road.
Norwich is a major tourist attraction. It offers a cathedral, a castle, a river and the country's only surviving outdoor daily market. For almost 1000 years it has been regarded as the capital of Norfolk. At present approximately 126,000 people live within the city boundary, but including the residents of the suburbs the total population of Greater Norwich is 250,000 people, nearly a third of the population of Norfolk. Other attractions nearby include Great Yarmouth, the Norfolk Broads, and the North Norfolk coast.
Norwich International offers a range of leisure destinations during the summer, mainly covering the Mediterranean. People are beginning to realise that Norwich is an international airport and has much to offer to the East Anglian traveller. The airport currently has a throughput of over 460,000 passengers per year, with 70% of passengers from Norfolk, 25% originating from Norwich itself. A conservative forecast for the passenger growth is 6% per annum over the next 10 years.
