The Helsinki-Malmi Airport was completed in 1936. When the Helsinki-Vantaa Airport was completed just in time for the 1952 Summer Olympics, the Helsinki-Malmi Airport was reserved for light commercial aircrafts and private planes. Small aircraft aviation restored the former glory of Malmi.

The operations at this airport are focused on training; some 75–80% of all traffic is training flights. The total number of members in different aviation-related clubs operating at the Helsinki-Malmi Airport is almost 3,000. In 2007, there were a total of 52,880 landings.
