George Best Belfast City Airport

George Best Belfast City Airport is owned by ABN AMRO Global Infrastructure Fund. It is a regional airport serving a range of destinations, mainly in Great Britain and Ireland. Situated on the south shore of Belfast Lough adjacent to the A2, one of the main arterial routes into the city, the airport has grown significantly in recent years and is a key strategic gateway to the province. Within a few minutes drive of Belfast city centre, GBBCA currently caters for over 2.5 million passengers per year, representing approximately 40% of the scheduled domestic air traffic to and from Northern Ireland.

GBBCA first opened as a commercial airport in 1938 and was launched as the Harbour Airport for commercial traffic in 1983. The new terminal opened in June 2001 and in 2005 there were just over 2,200,000 passengers through the terminal.
In 2003, ownership of the airport passed to Ferrovial. With its headquarters in Madrid, the Ferrovial Group has interests in the construction industry and airports around the world.
On May 22nd 2006 the airport was re-named George Best Belfast City Airport, to commemorate the life of the international footballing legend George Best, who was born and grew up close to the airport.
On the 6th February 2007, GBBCA receives the private sector Gold Award of Excellence at the Northern Ireland Quality Awards. In May, at the 02 Ability Awards, GBBCA is presented with the Environmental Accessibility and Customer Service Award.
In September 2008, GBBCA is sold for almost four times what former owners Ferrovial bought it for in 2003. Fortis pays Euro132.5 million.
In 2008 GBBCA celebrated its 25th anniversary in business and its proud association with the local community.
Today, GBBCA's primary market is the short haul scheduled services sector and there are no plans to be targeting the long haul passenger markets. Their core catchment area accounts for 54% of the Northern Ireland population and theirr business passengers account for 65% of their market.
