Since its inception as a civil airport in 1993, Frankfurt-Hahn has become one of Germany’s fastest growing airports. Within only ten years, Frankfurt-Hahn Airport has become one of the top-largest international airports (rank 11) and the fourth largest cargo-airport in Germany.


Frankfurt Hahn Airport is a veritable melting pot of travellers from all around the world. This international gateway to the Rhineland-Palatinate region boasts around 60 passenger flights within Europe a day with the low-cost airlines Ryanair, Wizz Air and Iceland Express. In the first year of commercial operation, a mere 7,000 passengers per year travelled from and to Hahn - today the figures amounted to around 10.000 per day. Cut price destinations include such places as France, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia, Island, Poland and Hungary. In the holiday season, large tour operators such as FlyCar organise charter flights to popular summer and holiday areas e.g. Swedish Lappland already for years.

Since January 2009 the federal state Rhineland-Palatinate has a stake in the Flughafen Frankfurt-Hahn GmbH as majority shareholder. The state holds 82.5 percent of Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, whereas the state of Hessia holds 17.5 percent of the shares.

On the one hand it gains access to the European commercial centres and on the other hand chances are opening up, that were never there before – for the retail industry and services as well as for the incoming tourism. For the medium- and long-term the tourism in the Hunsrück, Mosel, Nahe and Rhine regions will profit with a strong increase. Hotels and Restaurants near the airport already benefit today.
