Cluj-Napoca International Airport

Cluj-Napoca International Airport is situated on the road E576, about 10 km east towards the center of the Cluj-Napoca city and 12 km towards the railway station.


The first aviation activities in Cluj area, took place along the Somesul Mic Valley, in the Someseni village, situated east of Cluj at about 8 km from downtown, on the Cluj-Dej highway. In 1928 The War Ministry set up the National Service of Air Navigation for opening an air transportation line between Bucharest and Cluj. The airline used the Farman-Goliath aircraft, a plane with two engines and ten places.The Farman-Goliath aircrafts used as destination the Aerodrom of the II Group Aerodrome of Aviation – the Someseni Cluj Aerodrome.

The foundation date of the Cluj Civil Airport, by the Ministry of Trade and Industry took place on the 1st of April, 1932. The activity had begun on the Someseni Military Aerodrome, until a civil airport was set up.

Now, the Cluj-Napoca International Airport is the IIIrd country’s international airport and operates scheduled flights with Stuttgart, Frankfurt, München, Dusseldorf, Vienna, Bologna, Bergamo, Treviso, Florence, Verona, Rome, Ancona, Milano, Torino and Budapest.

The major work carried out until 2001 are: the expansion and modernization of the airport building, the adjustment of the passenger flow, the extension and reorganization of the parking places, major repairs at apron, the modernization of the runway lighting system, the implementation of Instrument Landing System of the 1st category.

The Council of the Cluj County initiated an extensive program of modernization of the airport consisting in the implementation of cargo activities, the building of a cargo apron, the extension of the apron and of the runway, as well as the further modernization of the runway lighting system.

Modernization and extension of the airport to consolidate the actual position as one of the main airports of the country regarding the intern and international number of the passengers and cargo, and to continue the development in the future.
