Location
Belfast International Airport
Belfast BT29 4ABUnited Kingdom
Belfast International Airport is an airport located 11.5 NM northwest of Belfast in Northern Ireland. It is also known as Aldergrove, after the village of that name lying immediately to the west of the airport. Belfast International shares its runways with the Royal Air Force base RAF Aldergrove, which otherwise has its own facilities.
Nearly 5.3 million passengers travelled through the airport in 2008, a 1.7 million (47.1%) increase since 2002. Belfast International is the 2nd busiest airport in Ireland in terms of passenger numbers, after Dublin Airport and it is the busiest airport in the province of Ulster. It is the larger of two airports in Belfast (the other being George Best Belfast City Airport).
The airport is owned by Abertis, the same company which owns Stockholm Skavsta, Cardiff Airport and is concessionary to Orlando Sanford International Airport and London Luton.
The passenger terminal at BIA is located on two floors - the upper floor for departing passengers and the ground floor for arriving passengers.
The passenger experience at BIA has been significantly enhanced by a terminal development programe, completed in 2004. In addition a 5000 sqft extension has created a new Departure Lounge in which passengers can enjoy a wide range of high steet retail and catering.
Facilities for departing passengers include postal services, cash machines, currency exchange, airport information, Business Lounge, baby change facilities and an excellent range of shops and restaurants.
A visitor information desk is located in the arrivals hall for all domestic and international arriving passengers, providing information on visitor attractions, onward travel and accommodation.
Currency exchange for international arriving passengers and car hire desks can also be found in the arrivals area.
There is a 24 hour media facility at Belfast International Airport. The office deals with a wide variety of media enquiries from print and broadcast journalists and is also responsible for all location filming and photography across the airport site.
