Location
On 5 October 1921 the first aircraft landed at the original airport located in the Alice Springs township.
Alice Springs Airport is a modern, fully air-conditioned terminal located 15 kilometres to the south of the township of Alice Springs, the main entry point and heart of Central Australia. Located between the East and West MacDonnell Ranges, Alice Springs is Australia's most famous outback town. With a population of over 27,000, it offers capital-city facilities without losing touch with its pioneering heritage and Outback friendliness.
Alice Springs Airport offers a range of services and facilities to visitors and passengers.
Alice Springs is also the perfect base for a Central Australian holiday, giving you easy access to all of the surrounding natural wonders: Uluru/Kata Tjuta National Park, Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon) and the East and West MacDonnell Ranges.
The Airport has allowances to take full code E type Aircraft B777/B747 and is an important alternate for the vast majority of traffic over flying the centre of Australia. It has also been certified and has capability for the A380.
The Airport also serves as a test bed for Boeing conducting hot weather trials relating to new in service aircraft as the summer temperatures can reach in excess of 40 degree Celsius (104 F).
The Airport also serves as a freight transfer base for US Air force military cargo planes taking equipment in and out of the nearby Pine Gap Joint Defence Military site outside of Alice Springs with C-17 & KC-10 aircraft types. In the past the airport has catered for C-5 Galaxy Aircraft from the US Air force fleet.
