The airport Friedrichshafen is situated at the border triangle Germany, Austria and Switzerland and it is considered as the southernmost regional airport of Germany.

In 1988 the construction of a new terminal began and during the following years extension and renovation activities have been continuously carried out, the airport received direct connection to the railroad line and invested in an instrument landing system in order to ensure a regular air traffic in bad weather.

Since 1998 the airport Friedrichshafen GmbH is the sole owner of the airport through a sales contract with the Federal Republic of Germany.
