The Aeroporto Friuli Venezia Giulia SpA is the Company that has been running the airport since July 1997; its shareholders are the Consorzio Aeroporto Friuli Venezia Giulia SpA (51%) and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region (49%).


The first official documents citing the airfield of Ronchi dei Legionari date back to November 30 1935, when the 4th Fighter Squadron of Royal Italian Air Force was based here.

In 1956, with the concession of the Ministry of Defence - the owner and operator the airfield - the "Consorzio per l'Aeroporto Giuliano" is set up for running commercial operations.

In 1967, the first international flight - a charter by the German airline LTU from Düsseldorf - takes place and opens up a new development phase that sees a growing number of leisure charter flights arriving from Northern Europe.

In 1998, opening of the brand-new airport facilities, including two terminals, one for passengers - with a capacity of up to 1.5 Million passengers per annum - and one for cargo.

In 2008, third-consecutive record year, with a total of 782,461 passengers.

In addition to that the Company aims at developing the non-aviation activities at the airport. The project of the "Polo Intermodale" is part of this planned expansion, that envisages the development of a multi-modal (air-road-rail) interchange that will be built in the near future just in front of the airport terminal.
