Polar Air Cargo is an American cargo airline based in Purchase, New York, USA. It operates scheduled all-cargo services to Asia, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the Americas. Its main base is John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, with hubs at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.

Polar was formed in 1993 as a joint venture between Southern Air Transport and GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS). It started operations in June 1993 and began with charter flights, later adding scheduled services. During 1994, Polar was certified as a supplemental air carrier by the Federal Aviation Administration and on 4 July 1994 as a US all-cargo carrier by the United States Department of Transportation. After several years of continued growth, the remainder of the company was acquired by GECAS.

Polar Air Cargo Worldwide provides a critical link in the global logistics chain with the largest fleet of Boeing 747 freighters among U.S. scheduled all-cargo carriers. By connecting major cargo markets with frequent Boeing 747-400 all-cargo service – using the best freighter for long-haul payloads – they deliver high-quality, time-definite scheduled air cargo service, enabling freight forwarders to connect to major markets quickly and dependably.

Built on a heritage of highly reliable scheduled air-cargo service, Polar delivers a strong express network through its partnership with DHL Express, which produces performance enhancements for Polar's freight-forwarder customers. In 2007, Polar's parent company, Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings, Inc., formed a long-term strategic alliance with DHL Express. As the owner of a 49% equity interest in Polar, DHL Express secured access to capacity on Polar’s 747-400 freighter services, combining DHL's leading position in Asia with Polar's unique access on U.S.-Asia routes and industry-leading services and support.

With a modern, all-cargo fleet, coverage of major world markets, vast experience in air cargo and a commitment to quality, safety and customer service, Polar Air Cargo is a key player in the facilitation of global trade.

Polar has earned the International Air Transport Association’s Operational Safety Audit (IOSA), a globally recognized safety and quality standard, and we’re the only U.S. all-cargo carrier to have all of its aircraft equipped with the Traffic and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS). Their fleet is fully certified to operate under very restricted visibility conditions and is 100% Stage III/Chapter III compliant.
