Piedmont Airlines, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of US Airways Group, Inc., and is one of ten airlines doing business as US Airways Express. US Airways is the 6th largest airline in the United States.

Piedmont Airlines was founded by Mr. Richard Henson in 1931 as Henson Flying Service, a fixed-base operator. In 1962 scheduled airline service commenced as Hagerstown Commuter.

Today, Piedmont operates nearly 440 daily departures to 55 cities throughout the eastern United States and Canada. They currently operate 51 deHavilland DHC-8 turbo prop aircraft. The Dash 8 is a state-of-the-art turboprop aircraft that offers safe and comfortable transportation for up to 50 passengers. Every flight aboard a Dash 8 features all the normal conveniences of modern air travel, including flight attendant service, overhead bin storage, cabin pressurization and a lavatory.

Older Dash 8s were replaced by a newer, faster version. Retirement of the Dash 7 in 1997 consolidated the airline to one aircraft-type. In 1999, Piedmont was operating a fleet of 52 Dash 8s and enplaning three million passengers a year.

Piedmont has continued the Henson tradition of leading the way for regional airlines. Piedmont was one of the first airlines of any size with a fully operational Advanced Qualifications Program for pilot training. Piedmont was also the first regional to be certified for use of the TCAS anti-collision system.

At the turn of the century, Piedmont was recognized by the FAA with a Team Spirit Award. The award was presented for Recognition of superior team effort for proactive strategic action promoting the Safer Skies Agenda throughout the government and industry partnership.

Piedmont's maintenance department was also recognized by the FAA. The department received the distinguished Diamond Certificate Award in 2000 and 2003 for its proactive role in aircraft maintenance training of its technical maintenance work force. Piedmont is continually preparing for the new challenges that await.

Their corporate headquarters is located in Salisbury, Maryland which is located about one hundred miles southeast of Baltimore, Maryland. Piedmont Airlines employs nearly 4000 aviation professionals.
